Everyone around me is getting sick and everyone seems to be using the same “Cold & Flu” pills, yet they don’t really help to boost their immune system or prevent them from getting sick again. It just relieves their symptoms temporarily until they sit next to a sneezing person again.

Leave it to my nanas to tell you the tricks on how to completely get rid of a cold, whether you are a kid, preggo, or an adult who just wants to use natural methods for a change!

#1 HOT LEMON WATER WITH A TWIST

Make it your daily habit to start your day with a warm cup of lemon water. It cleanses your organism by flushing out the toxins and, among other things, boosts your immune system due to the high amount of vitamin C it contains. Now, when you want to fight or prevent a cold, elaborate a bit and create a tailor made drink by adding some fancy ingredients.

My favorite recipe:

Squeeze ½ lemon in a cup of warm water, add a teaspoon of honey, which is full of vitamins, anti-bacterial & anti-fungal properties, and reduces cough irritation, and top it off with a pinch of cinnamon, known for its anti-viral and immune boosting abilities!

#2 SALTWATER SOLUTION

Saltwater is a miraculous thing you can easily make at home in like 2 minutes. Just heat up 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and stir it well. In the case of a sore throat, use that mix to gargle 2-3 times a day or up to 3 times a day as a nasal solution (apply with a syringe –without the needle of course).

There are plenty of saline nasal sprays sold in the pharmacies as well, my favorite is PHYSIOMER, but since you’re making a home-made version for the throat, you might as well use it for your nose too!

#3 SOUPS AND FLUIDS

Nutrition is a key factor for a healthy immune system and you need to fuel your body with loads of fluids in order to recover fast. Prepare your favorite soup (yet keep it simple) and consume as much water and herbal teas as possible!

20 min chicken soup recipe:

Slice a chicken fillet and cut 3 carrots in small cubes. Boil them in 1 ½ lt of water for 10minutes. Then add a cup of rice and keep boiling for another 10 (until the rice is well cooked). Your soup is ready! Garnish with a teaspoon of olive oil and chilly flakes or freshly ground pepper.

#4 MINT AND EYCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OILS

These two are miraculous creations and, whether it’s your thing to make essential oils at home or buy a bottle from the store, they will surely come in handy once sick. Humidity helps tremendously with a cold, especially if your nasal passages are blocked! My grandma suggests to put 2-3 drops of each oil in an extremely hot pot of steamy water and inhale deeply for as long as you can! Trust me, my nana knows best.

#5 REST

Whenever you can, wherever you can, as much as you can. Cancel any non-essential plans and stay in bed or on the couch, all cuddled up. Your body needs rest and relaxation. Try to take long naps and sleep it off.

MORE TIPS for when you are sick or around people who are sick:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Keep your personal space clean and sanitized
  • Change your bedsheets and pillow cases every 2-3 days
  • Take hot baths/showers
  • Allow fresh air to enter the space twice a day

NOTE:

This post is meant to help with a simple cold but if the symptoms do not go away in 2-3 days, you need to visit an actual doctor. This is not a medical blog and I am talking from personal experience and for things that work for my family and me.
